A multitude of drops

I realised that at first glance the title of my blog may seem a bit odd, so I thought that I would take this opportunity to explain it.

The title of my blog comes from the book/movie ‘Cloud Atlas’ by David Mitchell.

The story of Cloud Atlas revolves around six protagonists from different locations and periods throughout time from nineteenth century South Pacific to a post apocalyptic future. It shows how the actions of an individual can impact the world around them; past, present and future.

One of my favourite quotes from this movie is uttered during the closing scenes of the movie.

“No matter what you do, it'll never amount to anything more than a single drop in a limitless ocean.”
“But what is an ocean, but a multitude of drops?”

This quote really resonated with me. If we’re honest with ourselves, the likelihood of us changing the world singlehandedly is minimal. We won’t all have the impact of Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi. But these incredible leaders would have been nothing without the support of thousands of people. These people individually may not have much impact, but together they managed to create massive social change.

Don’t discount the impact you might have because it may not be big enough on its own. Together, we are strong.

As the influential Persian poet Rumi once wrote, "You are not just the drop in the ocean. You are the mighty ocean in the drop."

If you ever get the chance to read or watch Cloud Atlas, I highly recommend it.
